The Central Florida Association of Physicians from the Indian Subcontinent (CAPI) stands proudly as a local chapter of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) — an alliance that has shaped our growth, guided our mission, and amplified our voice within the U.S. medical community.

CAPI’s connection to AAPI runs deep. When a visionary group of physicians came together in 1995 to form what was then known as Doctors of South Asia (DOSA), their goal was clear: to create a unified space for Indian-American physicians to thrive — professionally, culturally, and philanthropically. With mentorship and structural support from AAPI, DOSA became part of a nationwide network empowering Indian-origin healthcare professionals to overcome challenges in credentialing, cultural integration, and representation.
Over time, DOSA evolved into CAPI, expanding to include dental professionals and broadening its mission to promote education, leadership, and community service across Central Florida. Today, CAPI remains the only official AAPI chapter in the region, proudly representing over 600 medical and dental professionals who continue to embody the values of unity, excellence, and service that AAPI championed from the start.

In 2015, CAPI Past President Dr. Amish M. Parikh served as Chairman of the 33rd Annual AAPI Convention and Scientific Assembly, held in Orlando, Florida. The five-day summit welcomed more than 2,000 physicians, academicians, and health professionals from around the world for an inspiring blend of education, innovation, and culture. Featuring sessions with distinguished speakers such as U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, the convention also showcased world-class entertainment, the inaugural AAPI Golf Classic, and community health initiatives in partnership with Orlando Health Foundation.
AAPI: Advancing Advocacy and Global Health
Founded in 1982, AAPI represents more than 100,000 physicians of Indian heritage across the United States — making it one of the most influential ethnic medical organizations in the country. Its mission spans advocacy, education, and philanthropy, bridging the healthcare communities of India and the U.S.
Through AAPI, Indian-American physicians have gained a collective voice in critical conversations around healthcare reform, immigration policy, Medicare and Medicaid legislation, and the fair recognition of foreign medical credentials. AAPI also plays a pivotal role in combating discrimination and promoting diversity in leadership across healthcare institutions.
AAPI’s Global Health Summits, Legislative Days on Capitol Hill, and leadership programs provide opportunities for physicians to exchange ideas, influence policy, and support global public health initiatives. Together, these efforts ensure that the expertise and compassion of Indian-origin healthcare professionals continue to make a lasting global impact.

CAPI: Carrying Forward a Shared Legacy
At CAPI, the spirit of AAPI lives on through our programs, partnerships, and people. We remain committed to building bridges between cultures, advancing medical education, and giving back to our community through scholarships, grants, and outreach programs. To date, CAPI has contributed more than half a million dollars — and growing — to strengthen Central Florida through service and education.
As we continue to evolve, our partnership with AAPI serves as both a foundation and an inspiration — reminding us that when we unite our voices, resources, and passions, we elevate not just our members, but the entire community we serve.
Together, CAPI and AAPI champion a legacy of compassion, collaboration, and cultural pride — a legacy that continues to heal, inspire, and empower.
